Yay for Heritage Day! What SAFFA needs an excuse to braai though, right?? 😉

Here are some great recipes for you in case you are looking for a little inspiration to make tomorrow extra special:

Serves 4
Preparation time: 15 minutes, plus at least 1 hour marinating
Cooking time: about 35 minutes
Ingredients for braai chicken
8 chicken drumsticks or thighs, about 700 g in total
lime wedges to serve
Jamaican jerk baste
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 onion, very finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 fresh red chilli, seeded and finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
grated zest and juice of 1 lime
Preparation for braai chicken
1 To make the baste, heat the oil in a small frying pan over a moderately low heat. Add the onion, garlic and chilli and cook, stirring frequently, for about 10 minutes or until the onion is softened and starting to brown. Sprinkle over the salt.
2 Tip into a large shallow bowl. Add the spices and the lime zest and juice, and stir well to mix.
3 Remove the skin from the chicken pieces. Make a few shallow slashes in the meat of each piece, then add to the bowl. Turn the pieces to coat thoroughly with the baste, rubbing it into the slashes in the meat. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 1 hour or in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
4 Prepare a charcoal fire. When it has burned down to coals covered with grey ash, remove the chicken pieces from the marinating baste and braai them for 20–25 minutes, turning and brushing frequently with the baste, until cooked all the way through.
5 Alternatively, preheat the grill to moderately high. Arrange the chicken pieces on the grill rack and grill for 20–25 minutes, turning and basting frequently.
6 Serve the chicken hot, garnished with lime wedges.

Here at Better Moves we are generally very proud to say who we are and tell people about us, mostly because we LOVE our ‘job’ and we love helping people through what is often one of the most stressful experiences in their lives (moving house or office). And more often than not, we leave them smiling. That is awesome for us and it makes us proud to say we are Better Moves. But TODAY, we are prouder than proud. Today we are peacock, puff-out-your-tail-feathers proud!

This is because today, we send off one of our finest, Derrick Lobban, (BM Director), to Scotland. We send him off to Scotland today because Derrick is off to represent us, SOUTH AFRICA, at the 8 Nations International Bowls Tournament as a precursor to the Commonwealth Games in 2014 (!!)

If South Africa bring back the gold he will stand a very good chance of representing South Africa in the Commonwealth Games next year.

Derrick will be skipping (captaining) the disabled trips team in Glasgow against 7 other teams from around the bowling world.

Derrick represented South Africa at the 2007 and 2011 World Championships for those with disabilities. This will be his third time of playing for SA.

Derrick played world bowls in 2007 in Sydney Australia and their team won
gold- South Africa won gold overall. These pictures are of that occasion.

All of us at Better Moves, our fans, and all of SA wish you the very best and we are so proud of you!

More Info:

The tournament is in Glasgow and is being held at the Kelvin Grove Bowling Club.
This tournament is a precursor to the Commonwealth Games also to be held in Glasgow next year with the bowls being played at the same venue.

TIME, KIDS, BROOM STICKS, RESHUFFLING… all these things inevitably end up in bruised and battered furniture.

But fret-not!

BetterMoves has a quick and easy, not to mention inexpensive, means of bringing bruised and battered furniture back to its former glory days!

fix damaged furniture

This quick trick comes from the Lily and Thristie from

What you need is:

Just mix together and dip a rag into the mixture. Then, just wipe your furniture down with it. This will completely eliminate those nips and make the furniture look nearly new again. And, because the vinegar and oil are not bad for the furniture, you can wipe it down as often as you like. If you have old coffee tables or any other furniture at home that needs a little pick me up, this is a great way to give it a new look again. It makes it very shiny and well-polished and not at all like something that you picked up for pennies at a yard sale.

 Sell your home fast

De-clutter and Clean the whole House

As easily as this seems, it is surprising how many people are so attached to their STUFF that is in their home that when it comes time to put the house on the market and show the house people are really turned off because of the mess. Spend a weekend and pack up at least ¼ of all of the items in your home, especially if they are very personalized items, pack them away possibility to a off site storage location. Then give your whole house a major cleaning. It the cleaning is too much for you hire it out.

Spruce Front Entry Area

Stand in front of your home and look carefully at the front entry area. Is it messy? Could the door use a fresh coat of paint? Do you have a welcome mat? Does your door bell work? Does the front door hardware look good and work properly? Do you have any plants/flowers on the front porch? Is the walkway to the front porch in good shape? If there are handrails, are they secure and looking good?  For the most part none of these fixes would total much money. Just make sure the first impression to any potential buyer is top notch.

 Minor Kitchen Makeover

If the cabinets are wood and they are old or dingy, consider cleaning, lightly sanding and giving them a paint job. This is not as hard as you may think and this one thing alone could possibly bring you thousands of extra rands in a sale. Make sure to use a primer first and high quality paint. Next, update the cabinet hardware. After the cabinets, look at updating the back splash. This can be done in many different inexpensive methods that look great.  This is the #1 area to do work to to increase your ability to sell your home fast.Sell your home fast

Minor Main Bathroom Makeover

Next to the kitchen inside of the home the bathroom will bring in the most money from a minor update. Again do the same as for the kitchen with the cabinets by painting and changing the hardware. Think about replacing the counter tops and faucet. On most vanities this can be done for a few hundred rands. If the toilet is old, dirty or a water leash, consider changing it with a new water saving model.

Minor Master Bedroom Update

This is the bedroom that should get work before any other. Freshen up the paint color. Replace the window covering with nice, but inexpensive new blinds and/or curtains. Make the bed the focus point of the room. Buy new bedding with a new comforter. (Even though these items do not stay with the house it will really make the room feel more finished.) If your bed does not have a headboard, consider building or purchasing one. Headboards make a huge difference in the completeness of this room. If your furniture is old or dingy consider painting it to make it all look consistent and fresh.

These are just a few Cosmetic Fixes to Sell Your Home Fast.  Completing all of these items is sure to bring you great results during the showings of your home and possibly much more money at the closing table.

It is less common to throw Housewarming parties due to the cost of living these days, but here at Better Moves we think there is no better way to warm a home than to have those you love most grace it with a small get-together.

So we are going to give you a few tips on how to throw a Housewarming Party well, and with the bank account in mind:

INVITES: can be quick and easy, and pretty darn cheap too!

1.Grab a bunch of paint swatches
2. Cut one (of the same colour choice) into horizontal strips
3. Glue each end of strip to either end of swatch
4. Print small invites (business card size or smaller)
5. Slide them into the paint swatch
6. Deliver to friends and family

Drinks need not be too pricey either, no one is coming to your Housewarming Party expecting a full bar. Simply get a couple bottles of Champers (JC Le Roux is a popular) and , lay out some flutes and pop some fruit inside each one. And just like that – you look like a pro 😉
If you are particularly creative you can even print off little notes, punch a whole in each one, and with a small piece of ribbon tie them to each flute.
“Make a toast” or “Cheers” are lovely ideas for wording.

Again, no one is coming expecting a full buffet, so don’t put pressure on yourself to supply one. These easy yet innovative ideas are a great treat for guests:

Cooked Pasta pockets on a stick, ready for dipping into a tasty Pesto Pasta sauce

Rosa Tomatoes, Mozarella and a Basil Leaf on a stick, drizzled with a bit of Balsamic Reduction – yummy!

Delicious little cupcakes with different coloured icing, topped with little notes attached to toothpicks or sticks, alternated with little fruit baskets in cupcake holders. Something for the sweet-toothed and something for the health-conscious, too.

Other nice snack ideas include:
– Crossants with various fillings, Ham/Lettuce/Cheese/Salami- Fruit Kebabs stuck into a large melon
– Wraps with various fillings
– Peppers in dip
– Sausage Rolls (always a treat)

Clever little idea to bring the colour swatch theme (like the invites) back on the day. Punch holes around two swatches and connect them with thin ribbon, creating a pocket for you to put your utensils and serviettes within – look how creative you are! 😉

Thank guests for helping to warm your home with a little gift to help ‘warm’ theirs too – a nice scented candle.

What do you think? Did this inspire you to throw a housewarming party next time you move house?
Let us know 🙂
